What Disease Did Stephen Hawking Have?

Hawking was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease). In a very straightforward sense, the nerves that controlled his muscles were movement down. At the time, doctors gave him two and a 0.5 years to live. 

Eventually, however, doctors did diagnose Hawking with the first stages of ALS. But, It was devastating news for him and his family.
